Why You Need A Word For The Year
Earlier this week I announced my word for 2020: STEP.
As I look ahead to Sunday, I can’t help but hope that my beloved Kansas City Chiefs will take that final step and finally reach the Super Bowl. Call me silly. Tell me it’s just a game and that the outcome doesn’t really matter. You can even call us crazy. After all the wind chill at game time is predicted to be 11 degrees!
As I look forward to Sunday, I can’t help but look back at all the steps that have brought us to this day. And I’m not talking about the actual football game now. I’m talking about all the small steps that have been taken by Matt and our entire family as we have attempted to heal physically and emotionally from Matt’s battle with leukemia.
I remember my wise friend’s suggestion to get some Chiefs tickets to help give Matt something to look forward to during treatment.
I remember how utterly exhausting each step was for Matt as he worked so hard to simply get to his seat.
I remember how we cried together during the Chiefs vs. Cancer games, not because Matt had cancer, but because he survived it.
Sunday is important because it is one more step toward normal; one more memory that helps put distance between us and cancer.
Psalm 37:23 reminds us that our steps are established by the LORD and that He delights in our journeys. It makes me think that God will be smiling down on our family on Sunday, as we cheer for our Chiefs and give Him all the glory.
I am thankful He guides our steps and I am thankful that my word for the year helps me look ahead with anticipation and look back with gratitude.
