surviving cancer talk: These Things Remain

Legendary basketball coach Jimmy Valvano said just a few months before his death, “Cancer can take all my physical abilities. But it cannot touch my heart, it cannot touch my mind and it cannot touch my soul.” This talk, ideal for a cancer survivor or fundraising event, tells how these words from a 25-year-old speech shaped our family in a real and personal way as our teenage son, Matt,  battled leukemia.

Blessings in the Battle

This talk focuses on how God revealed His truth to us and helped us to see the blessings in the battle when our family’s life as we knew it changed forever. On February 27, 2017, my 18-year-old-son Matt was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and we were challenged to truly trust and rest in the promises of scripture. Clinging to Romans 8:28 that says God will use all things for His glory and for the good of those who love him, God helped us see that all of life is a gift - even the really hard and messy parts - like leukemia.

The Comparison Crisis

For as long as I can remember, I have been in crisis - comparing myself to other women; their bodies, their abilities, their house, their husband and even their children. And you know what - so have you! It’s exhausting and frankly, I’m sick of it. This talk offers a refreshing and counter-cultural perspective based on Ephesians 2 that says we are all God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. It will challenge us to quit comparing and start celebrating the gifts of the women around us and the good work which God gives to us all.

Finding Contentment in the Chaos

We all have times in our lives when it feels like we’re losing control. Maybe it’s a season of change, a promotion at work, a loss of a loved one or the loss of something else we hold dear. The reasons for chaos vary, but the result is often the same: we are left feeling vulnerable and fearful about what lies ahead. This talk offers some practical and spiritual ways that we can learn to find the joy in the journey - no matter where it takes us.
