How To Find Hope When You're Hurting

Healing broken things is hard. It’s why doctors have to cut us open to fix us. It’s why doctors tell us not to put weight on a broken bone; why we can’t lift more than a few pounds and have to limit activities after surgery.

Doctors don’t want us to re-injure ourselves and take a step backward in the recovery process.

Unfortunately, most of our brokenness can’t be detected on an X-ray or fixed with a simple surgery. Often times, we don’t even understand our injuries or the extent of the hurt they cause us. We simply learn to live with our limp.

Then reinjury comes when we least expect it - in a misunderstanding with a friend, a comment from a family member or in an unexpected encounter with someone else’s pain that reminds us of our own.

Once the bandaid is ripped off our emotional wound, we can see that it is not healed or scarred over. We’re shocked to see the bloody injury is still there and so is the pain it causes us.

People say that time heals all things, but I tend to disagree. Time alone eases the pain of the experience but God is the true healer. The Bible is full of scriptures about God’s desire to heal us, to restore us, to use our pain for His purposes. It reminds me that God is our greatest hope for being whole and healthy.

More importantly, these truths give me the courage to face my brokenness - even asking God to show me the parts of me that still need healing. Would you join me in this prayer? I’d be happy to pray for you too-just leave me a comment or send me an email at RobinMayMinistries@gmail.com
